How do you prepare for a competition?

Writer's picture: Lacey GaleyLacey Galey

The big question is always how do I prepare for this? How do I get to winning? How do I do better?

Let's go over my plan on how I am going to get into the RRP (retired racehorse project) as an amateur trainer.

1.) Continue to learn- This is important because I am not claiming to be a professional, I am a 20 year old college student trying to enter the world of retraining off the track thoroughbreds (OTTB). Contentiously learning is the best way for me to apply what I learn to my profession. If I'm not learning I am not bettering myself, therefore I am not giving my future clients and the horses the best of me.

2.) Practice- Practicing what I learn, applying different methods to what I learn and adding on to it is a great way for me to come up with my own training method. I do not just listen or watch one trainer, I want to be diverse and train every horse as an individual.

3.) Observing- Watching clinics, watching other people ride is the way I taught myself how to and how not to do things when it came to horses. I can see what is working for them and how I would like to apply that to my own method of training.

4.) Training other horses- This is where people get in trouble, ( and where I need to outsource) they only work with one horse. I have worked with various breeds of horses from quarter horses to fresians. The issue that I have now is I am only currently working with one horse. I have been working with this horse for 3 years now(I have worked with various horses in this time) I have also worked school horses, colts, my older horses back home. I still have a lot to learn and getting a totally different breed of horse is going to test me as a trainer and as a horseman. I want to better myself and this competition will be a life changing experience.

Over the next few months I will be focusing on really diving into my horsemanship and learning more advanced maneuvers and ways to better my fundamentals. Once I apply o the RRP In December/January and get an answer back I will either continue working on my training with my current horse or I will be on my way to retraining a OTTB!!

Soon I will be uploading a blog with some training clips and pictures and we will dive into my training philosophy! Send me some of the issues you are having with your horse or something you have been wanting to learn and I will do a video over it!

I hope you all have a great day and I appreciate you taking the time to listen to my ideas!
